Who this is for

When your dreams came true, but reality doesn't feel like a dream in the moment. It can be hard to rationally know that you have so much to be grateful for, but not feel the actual joy and gratitude in your body. Perhaps you feel like it isn't severe enough to call your doctor, but it is real enough that it casts a shadow over your experiences.

If you recognize yourself in this, then SJW can support you.

Ingredients

Organic St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum, herba) extracted in organic alcohol and distilled water (60% v/v, gluten free).

How to use it

Take 2–3ml directly under the tongue or in a small glass of tea or water. Hold 30 seconds before swallowing for the fastest effect. Another option would be to add to your water bottle and drink throughout the day, although this will depend on your taste experience.

Consistency matters more than timing. The effect of herbs usually lasts for 3-4 hours. These plants work best as daily nourishment rather than acute intervention.

On alcohol content, especially for the breastfeeding mothers: a single dose contains less alcohol than a ripe banana. To be precise — 1/8th of a teaspoon at 70% alcohol. This is for the highest extraction ratio across all Rooted Mothers tinctures.

Contra indications

St. John's Wort induces cytochrome P450 enzymes in the liver (particularly CYP3A4) that are responsible for metabolising a significant number of common pharmaceutical medications. This is not a theoretical or minor interaction, but actually one of the most clinically documented herb-drug interactions in existence.

Pregnancy. There is insufficient safety data on St. John's Wort during pregnancy, and some research raises specific concerns about uterine activity. Therefore it is not recommended during pregnancy.

Contraceptives. St. John's Wort can reduce the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives, including the pill, patch, and some IUDs. There are documented cases of unplanned pregnancy linked to this interaction.

Antidepressants. St. John's Wort is not appropriate for severe depression or bipolar disorder. Combining SJW with antidepressants can lead to serotonin syndrome. If you are currently taking or considering stopping any mental health medication, this must be discussed with your prescribing doctor first; both because of the interaction risk described above, and because abruptly stopping prescribed treatment can be genuinely dangerous.

Pharmaceutical medications. SJW can interact with several pharmaceutical medications, such as blood thinners, immunosuppressants, HIV medications, chemotherapy drugs, statins and more.

SJW is an extraordinary and beautiful herb that has been of great support to many women, but it should be taken appropriately.
